We Need You
LALA needs help to tell stories about language in Los Angeles.
- Anyone can submit an article to LA Language World (LALA). We welcome brief personal anecdotes for publication as "First Person" pieces (see the home page). We will consider feature articles on local communities, individuals, and issues and critical and creative "language reviews" of events, locales, books, films, or performances. Until further notice, we cannot pay for articles. With the exception of "First Person" submissions, we generally ask for help in locating suitable photos or other art. We do not promise publication, and we invariably ask for revisions. Submissions must relate to language and to Greater Los Angeles. They must be thoroughly researched and exclusive to our publication. We strongly recommend—we all but require—that potential contributors pitch their story ideas to the editorial staff at lalamag@international.ucla.edu before writing. No fiction, please.
- If you're a college student or recent graduate, you can apply to join LALA as intern. This is an opportunity to learn reporting, writing, editing, and web publishing skills, to get your byline on articles, and to contribute photos and multimedia content. You'll work closely with a team of reporters and editors to define the publication.
Applicants should have strong writing skills, a good eye for news, and a prior interest in language. Bilingual and multilingual applicants are strongly preferred, and all languages are valued alike.
Duration of internships is negotiable, with a three-month minimum. We ask for ten to fifteen hours of work per week and accept applications year-round. The internships are unpaid.
Apply by sending your cover letter, resume, and writing samples (in the body of your e-mail) to lalamag@international.ucla.edu.
