Korean and German, Too, in Glendale
letter to the editor
Thank your for Rey Rodriguez' most recent article ["Bilingual Education Net Dead Yet" (11/28/2007)]. He has succinctly stated the difficulties of maintaining bilingualism in children in the U.S. Those of us who struggle to work in bilingual education need the support of parents and those outside the school system in order to get the word out that maintaining a heritage language should be a right for every child. All children should be given the opportunity to become multilingual at an early age—it broadens their perspective, as well as providing economic and social advantages. We are proud that the Glendale Unified School District is looking to the future with its Foreign Language Academies of Glendale (FLAG) programs and providing dual language immersion programs in Korean and German, as well as Spanish. I hope that you will continue to print Rey's well-thought-out articles.
